You’re Nicked!

August 5, 2011

Yesterday @brandshandy nicked my post about the Gulp Stop Motion Animation (their words not mine!) “Gulp stop-animation shot with a Nokia N8: original article via @brendanmitchell (but we nicked it for BS)”

Of course they didn’t actually nick anything, they stumbled across my tweet, clicked the link, thought, “Oow that’s nice, worthy of our own blog”, and simply quoted me as a source, to which I say Thank You Very Much (in my best Elvis Presley impersonation)

I’m all for being as open as possible, I’ve written about it numerous times, (Dirty Laundry, The 3 T’s Rule) plus of course there’s Bernd’s Inspired by icon An Inspired Idea … but I must admit that in this instant I failed myself, as I forgot to mention my source! which was Engadget… tut tut I know.

Anyway my point is this, if you say where you copied something from, or reference who inspired you, then you can’t exactly call that stealing can you!

As I’ve said before…  “Copy whatever you want, they’re only words… I didn’t invent them, I just arranged them that way”

In any case… Copying from a single source is called plagiarism, copying from multiple sources is called research!

What is Being Creative?

January 20, 2011

creativity is no longer a word reserved for the musician or artist
it’s something you can find in anyone
it’s the ability and urge to make something of value
it can be big
it can be small
but making something new
something different
something that surprises
something that makes you think
something that makes you smile
it’s making something beautiful
it’s telling a story
it’s telling your story
expressing yourself
it’s about being passionate
it’s creating something that other people can use
sharing your creativity
it’s realising that there isn’t always a right way or a wrong way of doing things
and that there’s not always a correct answer
only the answers that we create
but common for creativity is that is comes from inspiration
inspiration found in the world that we live in
and the people we live with
it’s found in what we share with them
building on what’s given from the diversity of people’s thoughts and perspectives
so try and drop the assumption that you know how to do things
and already know the solution
stray away from the direct path
take risks
don’t be afraid to make mistakes
because it’s only from the mistakes that we learn
and it’s from the mistakes that the really interesting things happen
we may not always create or invent
but we always learn when we try

Look for Questions

Size Matters

August 19, 2010

Here’s a great presentation by Nigel Marsh given at TEDx Sydney in May, I recommend watching it, it’s only 10mins long, here’s a snippet

“the small things matter… being more balanced doesn’t mean dramatic upheaval in your life… with the smallest investment in the right places, you can radically transform the quality of your life and relations… I believe it can transform society, as if enough people do it we can change society’s definition of success… away from the notion that the ‘Guy with the most money when he dies wins’… to a more thoughtful and balanced definition of what a life well lived looks like”

It dove tails perfectly with one aspect of the “Your Small Change” non-profit concept I had a while back, which I’m rolling out in the coming weeks, so I’d love it if you drop by the Facebook page in the meantime and clicked the LIKE button to show your interest and support
